Selecting the right background is important for getting page views. A background needs to make the page more interesting but not distract.

You can search for a template with a certain name. Or you can browse by category. The best layouts are simple ones or ones with a sexy background. The simple layout will allow user to look at your content such as your blogs and shout box. The sexy layout will attract guys to keep coming back. Especially if you also have a hot avatar.

The worst thing a background can do is make text unreadable. If you have a background that makes any text on your page unreadable, that will just annoy people and they wont want to come back to your page.
